Director of Special Services
RSU 26 Orono
RSU 26 is seeking candidates for the Director of Special Services position. This full-time, year-round position is a key position for RSU 26 district leadership.
JOB GOAL:
To provide leadership in the development and coordination of educational programs for students with disabilities or other educational needs in accordance with federal and state laws and school board policies. Assigned programs will include: Special Education, Section 504 of the Vocational and Rehabilitation Act, English Language Learners, School Health Services, Chapter 104/Gifted and Talented, Supervision and Evaluation, Social Work Services and Affirmative Action Officer.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Provide leadership, technical support and coordination for all assigned programs.
- Oversee and provide leadership to required student plans, ensuring plans are developed and implemented as required by law.
- Coordinate professional development and training needs for staff and the resources necessary to address those needs.
- Hire, supervise and evaluate all staff in assigned programs in alignment with the district procedures/policies.
- Develop annual budgets for all assigned programs for school board approval, monitor expenditures and revenues and report discrepancies to the Superintendent in a timely fashion.
- Coordinate with community service providers and other agencies to support a continuum of services to students and families both in and outside of school.
- Ensure effective communication with staff, parents, the administrative team and school board using a variety of tools to obtain and provide timely information, address concerns, and reach consensus on issues.
- Assume responsibility for professional growth by keeping current with law and regulations, best practices, research and methodology
- Utilize data to monitor program activities, outcomes and student achievement and report these findings to the Superintendent.
- Ensure all assigned programs are in compliance with federal and state laws, regulations and school board policies.
- Complete all required reports (federal, state and district) in a timely fashion
- Perform all other tasks and assigned responsibilities in an effective manner.
QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDE:
- Bachelor’s & Master’s degrees from accredited colleges or universities with related special education coursework required
- Director of Special Education State of Maine Certification (030).
- Successful prior experience working in the field of Special Education.
- CHRC Approval
Screening process will begin February 24, 2020. Position will be filled as soon as a qualified applicant is found with a start date of July 1, 2020.
