Honoring the past paving the future
Vision: A modern coated, six lane track with a center multipurpose synthetic field and tennis courts to be used for:
• varsity and jv field hockey • girls jv and varsity soccer • boys jv and varsity soccer • jv and varsity football • boys jv and varsity track and field • girls jv and varsity track and field • Orono youth summer track programs • Orono summer soccer programs • jv and varsity girls tennis • jv and varsity boys tennis • community and recreational tennis • regional high school playoff contests • early spring practices for softball and baseball • Orono summer, spring and fall recreational programs • community walking and fitness programs • Orono recreation department use • youth soccer, field hockey and football rentals
Project Overview: The track and courts were built over 30 years (courts resurfaced sooner) ago and is currently presenting a hazard for student athletes and community members. We also recognize deteriorated tennis courts, soggy fields, ailing bleachers, and an aging booster shack on school property.
The tradition and success of our track program is evident. This year there are 56 participants. Orono is home to the recent 2012 and 2013 Girls State Championship teams, the 2013 Boys State Runner-up team. Orono is home to state champion track teams from 1962, ‘68, ‘69, ‘70, ‘72, ‘73, ‘74, ‘75, ‘76, 77, ‘80,‘83, ‘86, ’89, ‘96, and ‘97. Orono’s middle school teams and summer track programs are filled with participants. Our tennis teams number over 30 students per year. Our soccer program has seen 11 Eastern Maine Championship appearances over the past six years. Poor drainage is the source of most of the issues on the site, as the track surrounding the football field is at a higher elevation, creating swamp-like conditions on the field and frost issues underneath the track.
Essentially, drainage needs to be redesigned to be rerouted to drain away from the field and track towards the back side of the practice football field, baseball and tennis courts. The field, which is only used on football game days, needs to be raised to the level of the track which presents an opportunity to resurface for as a multiuse facility.
A multipurpose track and field with a synthetic field will quickly become an attraction and centerpiece to the Orono community.
